Job Description

Area Representative

International Student Exchange | South Bend, Indiana

Pan Atlantic Foundation | Flexible Part-Time | 1099 Independent Contractor
$1,000 Per Successful Student Placement + Opportunities to Earn International Travel

Bring the World to South Bend

What if your community could become part of a student's once-in-a-lifetime American experience?

Pan Atlantic Foundation is looking for a South Bend Area Representative to help international high school students find welcoming host families, connect with local schools, and become part of the community.

This is an opportunity for someone who enjoys meeting people, building relationships, discovering what makes a community special, and helping young people make memories they will carry home with them.

And South Bend has plenty to share.

From the energy of University of Notre Dame football weekends to the St. Joseph River, Lake Michigan beaches, local festivals, museums, outdoor adventures, and a growing downtown scene, an exchange student can experience many different sides of American life right here in Michiana.

What You'll Actually Do

Find Families Who Want to Share Their World

You'll introduce local families to the opportunity to host an international exchange student.

That may include:

  • Sharing the program through social media, community connections, and local events
  • Responding to families who are interested in hosting
  • Meeting with prospective host families
  • Explaining the expectations and responsibilities of hosting
  • Completing required host family interviews and approval steps
  • Staying connected with families throughout the exchange experience

You don't need a huge network on day one. You need the willingness to start conversations and build one.

Build Connections With Local Schools

Exchange students need a school community where they can participate, make friends, and experience everyday American high school life.

You'll work to:

  • Establish relationships with local high schools and school personnel
  • Identify schools open to international exchange students
  • Communicate with counselors and administrators
  • Help coordinate school enrollment
  • Build awareness of international exchange opportunities in the area

Help Students Experience More Than Just School

This is where South Bend gets especially interesting.

An exchange student shouldn't simply attend school and go home. They should have opportunities to discover what makes their new community unique.

Depending on the student and host family, that could mean:

  • Exploring the iconic University of Notre Dame campus and experiencing the excitement surrounding Fighting Irish traditions
  • Visiting the Golden Dome, Basilica, Grotto, and other Notre Dame landmarks
  • Catching a South Bend Cubs game
  • Exploring the Studebaker National Museum and South Bend's fascinating automotive history
  • Walking, biking, or spending time along the St. Joseph River
  • Experiencing the East Race Waterway and its unique downtown whitewater course
  • Visiting Potawatomi Zoo
  • Enjoying downtown South Bend's restaurants, arts, entertainment, and community events
  • Taking a day trip toward Lake Michigan and experiencing Northern Indiana's beaches and outdoor recreation
  • Exploring nearby communities throughout Michiana
  • Experiencing seasonal traditions, festivals, sports, and everyday life that make the area feel like home

South Bend offers a particularly fun combination of college-town energy, sports, history, outdoor recreation, arts, and easy access to Lake Michigan and Chicago .

Be a Local Resource for Students

Once a student arrives, you'll help make sure they are adjusting and have the support they need.

Responsibilities may include:

  • Welcoming students and helping them get connected
  • Maintaining regular communication with students and host families
  • Completing required supervision visits and check-ins
  • Encouraging students to participate in school activities, clubs, sports, and community life
  • Helping address questions or concerns
  • Communicating significant concerns to PAF staff
  • Helping students and families navigate the occasional bumps that come with an international experience

You won't be expected to solve everything alone. You'll have training, resources, and support from the Pan Atlantic Foundation team.

Who Would Be Great in This Role?

We're looking for someone who is:

  • Friendly, dependable, and comfortable talking with people
  • A natural relationship builder
  • Organized and able to manage their own schedule
  • Comfortable communicating with parents, teenagers, educators, and community members
  • Willing to make phone calls and follow up
  • Able to work independently while staying connected with a team
  • Comfortable handling sensitive situations with maturity and good judgment
  • Excited about cultural exchange and helping young people succeed
  • Willing to become involved in the local community

Experience in education, recruiting, coaching, customer service, sales, youth programs, nonprofit work, community organizations, hospitality, counseling, family services, or community leadership can be helpful—but exchange program experience is not required.

Training is provided.

A Part-Time Role That Doesn't Feel Like a Desk Job

This isn't a traditional 9-to-5 position.

Your schedule can flex around your life and the needs of your students, families, and schools. Some responsibilities can be handled from home, while others happen in the community.

One week might mean meeting a prospective host family. Another could involve talking with a school counselor, checking in with a student, or attending a community event.

It's a role built around relationships, flexibility, and initiative.

Compensation & Opportunity

  • $1,000 per successful student placement
  • 1099 independent contractor position
  • Flexible, part-time schedule
  • No traditional hourly wage or salaried base
  • Opportunities to earn international travel
  • Training and ongoing support provided

Your success is directly connected to your ability to develop relationships and create opportunities in your community.

Your South Bend Territory

The primary focus will be South Bend and surrounding Michiana communities , with outreach and student support extending into nearby areas as appropriate. Mishawaka, Elkhart. Goshen

We're especially interested in candidates who have connections to:

  • Local schools
  • Youth organizations
  • Sports programs
  • Civic organizations
  • Churches and faith communities
  • Businesses
  • Parent and family networks
  • Community groups
  • Local events and activities

You don't have to already know everyone in South Bend. You simply need to be willing to get out there and start connecting.

Why Become a Pan Atlantic Area Representative?

This opportunity gives you a chance to:

  • Make a meaningful difference in a young person's life
  • Help a local family experience another culture
  • Build relationships throughout your community
  • Work independently with flexibility
  • Develop recruiting, outreach, and communication skills
  • Become part of an international network
  • Earn income based on successful placements
  • Potentially earn international travel opportunities

Most importantly, you'll help create the kind of experience an exchange student dreams about when they decide to spend a year in America.

South Bend Has a Story to Share. Help a Student Become Part of It.

If you're outgoing, community-minded, organized, and excited by the idea of bringing international exchange to Northern Indiana, we'd love to hear from you.
